A Greeting
But I will hope continually,
and will praise you yet more and more.
(Psalm 71:14)
But I will hope continually,
and will praise you yet more and more.
(Psalm 71:14)
A Reading
Then justice will dwell in the wilderness,
and righteousness abide in the fruitful field.
The effect of righteousness will be peace,
and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust for ever.
My people will abide in a peaceful habitation,
in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting-places.
(Isaiah 32:16-18)

and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust for ever.
My people will abide in a peaceful habitation,
in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting-places.
(Isaiah 32:16-18)
He made the storm be still,
and the waves of the sea were hushed.
(Psalm 107:29)
and the waves of the sea were hushed.
(Psalm 107:29)
A Poem
What is it makes a church so like a poem?
The inner silence – spaces between words?
The ancient pews set out in rhyming rows
Where old men sit and lovers are so still?
Or something just beyond that can’t be seen,
Yet seems to move if we should look away?...
Then surely it is not the church itself
That makes a church so very like a poem,
But only that unfolding of the heart
That lifts us upward in a blaze of light
And turns a nave of stone or page of words
To Holy, Holy, Holy without end.
–from "Unison" by F.R. Scott

Verse for the Day
Pause and be quiet, my people,
because your rest will come.
(2 Esdras 2:24)
because your rest will come.

Before becoming a founding member of the Group of Seven painters, Arthur Lismer attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (then Victoria School of Art and Design) and was one of the few people to record in drawings the aftermath of the 1917 Halifax Harbour explosion. With AY Jackson, Fred Varley and Tom Thomson he made many painting trips into the Algoma region of Ontario, a source of much inspiration. He once wrote to a child (and future painter): "Don't paint the apple; paint the red."
